In his fifth NHL season, Messier passed 100 points for the first time in his career on 48 goals and 58 assists in 77 games. He was named to the NHL's First All-Star Team for the second consecutive season. In the postseason, he led his team with 15 goals in 15 games as the Oilers fell in the Finals to the New York Islanders.
