Long before his legendary third-period Hat Trick cemented The Guarantee during the New York Rangers' run to the 1994 Stanley Cup, Mark Messier notched his first NHL Hat Trick, on March 16, 1981.

This is the jersey he was wearing that game.

Messier wore this White Set 2 jersey while playing for the Edmonton Oilers during the 1980-81 National Hockey League regular season. Messier's name was on his back when he did, but the name was removed following the season and Messier wore this jersey without a name on back during the 1982 NHL Preseason.

The jersey is photo-matched to the game in which Messier scored his first career hat trick, a 7-6 OIlers victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton, AB.

Messier scored his 18th goal of the season at 19:23 of the first period, his 19th goal of the season at 7:41 of the second period, and his 20th goal of the season at 12:44 of the third period. Each goal was scored at even strength.

Messier played in 72 games during the 1980-81 season, his second in the NHL, scoring 23 goals with 40 assists. He added two goals and five assists in nine games during the 1981 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In 12 years with the Oilers, Messier scored 392 goals with 642 assists in 851 games. The two-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner and the 1984 Conn Smythe Trophy winner ranks third all-time in career assists with 1,193 and in points with 1,887. His 694 goals rank ninth all-time.
