The Devils were deliberate with Hughes' development, and he scored 18 goals with 34 assists in 117 games over his first two seasons, both shortened due to Covid-19. In 2021-22 Hughes began to realize his true potential both on the ice and off of it despite missing significant time due to injury. He scored 26 goals with 30 assists in 49 games, and was named an alternate captain while finishing 7th in the Lady Byng Trophy voting.

In his age 21 season of 2022-23, it all came together for him. Hughes played 78 games, and led the Devils with 43 points and 56 assists,propelling the Devils to their first Stanley Cup Playoff series win since their 2012 Eastern Conference Final victory (over the same New York Rangers). He continued his torrid pace to begin 2023-24.
