In his first full season playing at the NHL level, Exelby played in 71 games and scored his first National Hockey League goal. He finished the season with one goal, nine assists, and 134 penalty minutes, the second-most on the team.

Over seven years in the NHL, Exebly played in 408 games with the Atlanta Thrashers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored seven goals and finished with 50 points and 584 penalty minutes. In the American Hockey League, he skated in 404 games, scoring 18 goals and 77 points and finishing with 908 penalty minutes. In 2002, he became a Calder Cup Champion with the Chicago Wolves.
