Population Report
Eddie Shore was an NHL player for the ages. The brown, gold and white Boston Bruins sweater Shore wore during the 1927-28 and 1928-29 NHL seasons has withstood the test of time.
This jersey is believed to be the earliest game-worn jersey in the history of the hobby that has been conclusively photo-matched to the player who owned it throughout his life.
MeiGray purchased this jersey from the heirs of Eddie Shore in 2000, and the jersey looks today like it did eight decades ago.
According to Shore's son, his fastidious father kept this jersey securely wrapped in plastic, hanging in a cedar closet, for four generations in their Springfield, Mass., home.
Photo matched to sweat stains below the neck, a repair on the shoulder, and unique holes and threads on the crest, this remarkable sweater speaks to NHL hockey in the Roaring 20s, when Shore was the best player in the game and the Bruins won a Stanley Cup in 1929.

MeiGray Vintage Report
The Boston Bruins made their National Hockey League debut on December 1, 1924 with a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Maroons at Boston Arena. The Bruins during their premiere season wore a brown sweater with simple yellow striping and lettering. For the 1925-26 season they wore a white sweater with brown, yellow, and white stripes on the sleeves and body. In 1926-27 the Bruins debuted the style Shore wore above. This popular design lasted for six seasons, including the season in which the Bruins won their first Stanley Cup ... with Shore their leader and stalwart on defense.
As warranted by the Shore family, this sweater was worn during the 1928-29 Stanley Cup season. We have also photo-matched this sweater to a photograph taken in Boston Arena, where the Bruins last played in 1927-28. The sweater's considerable wear, not to mention typical NHL protocol of the 1920s and the photo-match and family testimony, is evidence that the sweater was worn during both NHL seasons.
The sweater was manufactured by Horace Patridge Company, the Boston, Mass., company that produced the Bruins' jerseys for more than three decades. The Horace Patridge Co. tag sewn into the lower left hem is still intact, evidence of how carefully Shore and his family preserved the jersey for 71 years before its purchase by MeiGray on June 3, 2000 in Hampden, Mass.
Another game-worn sweater of this exact style exists in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario, one worn by Shore's teammate, Lionel Hitchman. The Horace Partridge Co. tag, the collar, the felt crest and its repairs, the cuffs, two-color back number, and sweater design all match exactly between the Shore and Hitchman jerseys.
