Joe Sakic wore this white jersey while playing for the Colorado Avalanche during the 1996-97 National Hockey League season.
This Starter jersey shows exceptional wear for a Sakic, as it is littered with black marks, burns and puckering across the front, back, sleeves and even shoulders. The jersey is photo-matched to five game at McNichols Sports Arena:
--A 2-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on March 1, 1997. Match points include mesh hole alignment and puckering on the crest.
--A 3-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on March 12, 1997. Match points include the black mark on the crest and loose thread on the left sleeve "9."
--A 4-3 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on March 21, 1997. Match points include black marks to the bottom and left of the crest and the black mark on the right sleeve "1." Sakic had one assist in the game.
--A 3-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 29, 1997. Match points include black marks on the torso next to the left side hem, the black mark intersecting the number 1 on the back of the jersey and the burn on the left sleeve.
--A 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on April 6, 1997. Match points include the black marks on the right sleeve numbers as well as the black marks to the left of the team crest on the right side of the jersey. Sakic had one goal in the game.
The two-time Stanley Cup Champion and 1996 Conn Smythe winner scored 22 goals with 52 assists in 65 games during 1996-97. His 1,641 career points rank ninth all-time among Canadian players, and he was a first-ballot Hockey Hall of Fame inductee with a total of 625 goals and 1,016 assists in 1,378 career games.
Sakic also captained the Avalanche for 16 consecutive seasons (17 total), making him the second-longest serving captain in NHL history at the time. His career year came in 2000-01, when he posted his only 50-goal season (54) to go with 64 assists and a whopping +45 rating. It was one of five 100-point seasons for Sakic.
