BRANCHBURG, N.J. - Do you believe in being able to touch a miracle?
The jersey worn by 1980 US Olympic Team defenseman Ken Morrow during the Miracle On Ice victory over the Soviets and purchased for $104,328.28 by The MeiGray Group last winter will be on public display for the first time ever on Saturday, July 14 at the Ninth Annual MeiGray Game-Worn Jersey Expo at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, New Jersey.
The white Team USA jersey will be the centerpiece on display at the college's Conference Center from 9 am to 4 pm at the MeiGray Expo. The Hockey Hall of Fame's Traveling Collection, and game-worn hockey jersey exhibits from around the world will also highlight the show.
"I'm so glad you got it," said Morrow, the former New York Islander who became the first hockey player ever to win a gold medal and the Stanley Cup in the same year, 1980, when notified that MeiGray had issued the winning bid with plans to display the jersey publicly. "So glad to know people are going to see it on display."
Collectors will be invited to take pictures next to the jersey, touch it, and reminisce about the greatest sports upset of the 20th century ... the USA's 4-3 victory over the USSR that catapulted the US Olympic Team to the gold medal game vs. Finland two days later. The US won that game, and the gold medal, wearing blue. Morrow's blue gold-medal winning jersey, worn in the US's 4-2 victory over Finland, sits in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
MeiGray intends to set a new hobby record on Saturday ... most Miracle on Ice jerseys displayed in one room. MeiGray will pair Morrow, No. 3, with the Mark Wells No. 15 jersey that MeiGray has displayed before. Wells sold his jersey in 2001 for $7,000.
The Morrow and Wells jerseys are believed to be the only two Miracle of Ice jerseys circulating in the game-worn hockey hobby.
Admission to the Expo is $25, which includes a ticket to the show and a goody bag that will include an NHL authentic hockey jersey.
